The Upside of Data Analytics Roles

Today the word Data Analytics is used as an umbrella term to describe many of the activities that are required for someone to use data to find an insight. On this site we prefer to use the phrase "data & analytics" because so much of the effort involved in analyzing data is actually the collection and preparation of data itself. While data & analytics is being done in every industry of every size, we are going to focus on the jobs that exist in corporate settings and why they are a great option for long term careers.

Demand: You may have heard the phrase "data is the new oil". This saying is not hyperbole, it really has become the driver of many facets of business. As more and more parts of business become digital and allow for massive amounts of data to be collected and stored, there is an ever growing need for professionals who can make sense of it all. While new technology offers the promise of making it easier to use the large volumes of data being collected, those who can manipulate and interpret data are still the key to unlocking the value of data. The result is great for us, jobs in this field are abundant and come with great benefits and job security.

Pay: Data jobs are some of the highest paying jobs you can find out there in corporate America. Entry level jobs start in the $60k range and easily get above 6 figures with a few years of experience. It is also common to get into the 6 figure range as either a manager or individual contributor.

Flexibility: Unless you go into the IT space or develop real-time analytics used to run the business, you are likely to have a lot of flexibility with data jobs. This means that there probably won't be off hour support time and in many cases you'll have flexibility in your schedule.

Growth Potential: This field is not shrinking or going away any time soon. It is however constantly and rapidly evolving. This means that there will always be opportunities to learn new technology and take on bigger and bolder projects. For those who like to learn (and you probably shouldn't consider this field if you don't) it is a great opportunity to be continually learning and growing your skillset.
